Valentina's Post Mission Briefing: Entry 2

Year 0 Day 3

Operation Sky Eye:

Mission Alpha

Mission Description:

We need to find out what has happened to the rest of the planet. We're currently working on better long range options and satellite surveillance, but for the time being we'll have to make do with some short range aerial recon. We need to conserve rocket parts until we can secure some materials to build them. We'll need to use those plane parts we dug up. The props still seem to be in good order.

Objective:

Using the old aircraft parts we recovered, build a short range scout plane to look for any signs of life within a 50km Radius of the space center. If we can't go that far, at least north to the mountains, and south to the islands. I doubt anyone is left, but we need to make sure.

Mission Report:

The mission was mostly a success. We scouted out to the mountains in the north, and down to the islands in the south. The plane for the most part performed fine, but we had some problems on landing. As in we crashed it, twice. It wasn't the pilots fault. The breaks are very weak and the air frame is so stable it doesn't flair well for landing. A redesign will have to be made so that we can land at the island air strip and check it out. There were no signs of life on flyby. It looks fairly run down and misused. After a careful inspection I think I'll recommend reusing and recycling anything that's there. For now though we're treating it with caution. That is where the command to launch the Thor's came from after all. I can't believe how close it is too. Just a few Kilometers from our home is where that disaster launched from.

We managed to collect soil samples and reports from several areas around the space center as well. The soil analysis hasn't come back yet, but if it comes back clean we may start expanding the space centers operations. I know the grasslands just north of here would a good close mining base to start extracting resources from. Kerbin doesn't have a ton of them left, but what is here is more than enough for we few who remain. Hopefully the soil samples will turn up more about what happened as well. Before all this I mean. When there was more to Kerbin than Barren ground a space center. Although computing power is still limited, so who knows how much we'll actually learn.

Future Mission Recommendation:
We restored some old telescopes and cameras during the mission window. I think it's time we launch someone into an orbit around the planet and do some survey's from space. We'll learn a bit more about what happened, figure out if there is a chance for more survivors, and see where else we can go to rebuild. We've still got a ton of work ahead of us. This is progress though, and progress means we're headed somewhere. I just don't know where that is yet...

Gene Kerman: Entry 1

It's year 0 Day 1- At least that's what I've decided to call it anyway. I'm now in charge of what's left of all Kerbal Kind. 5 of us came out of the Hibernation Chambers after the attack on the New KSC. We were down there a long time, but we have no idea how long yet. Thankfully the Hibernation Chamber, Goo Vats, and stores of parts survived upon farther inspection. We also have the experimental Cloning vats to work with. That was the rest of Plan C. If all else fails, rebuild the Kerbal Race in the likeness of the best of us. I hate that it come to this, but we must press on.

Day 2- After waking the others, we've began to scour the KSC looking for anything that will tell us what happened. The outlying center is non existent. It seems only the hardened buildings remain standing. The VAB is entirely intact. I'm not sure why no one hid in there, but they didn't. The SPH and runway are only minorly damaged, and the top section the science complex is what recieved the most damage. Most of this Jeb and Bob can repair. I'll take Bill with me to work on getting the cloning vats working. Valentina will continue to scour for supplies. We're good on food, water, and power, but very short on parts.

Day 135- It's been awhile since I've written. A long while. We just had so much work to get going. We're able to clone 5 Kerbals at a time, as they require the Hibernation chamber to mature. They need to be educated, but that is easy. Something about this process makes them learn fast. We were the best they said, and these clones are all mixes of our DNA. We'll have a full crew running in no time, as the first few Kerbals we...bred? Are getting to work increasing the efficiency that we repair damages with. We'll be good as new in no time! I probably won't write for awhile again, at least until something major happens. This is so hard to keep up with.

Year 1, Day 1- We've got everything back up to speed. The main KSC is in full working order and we've got a couple dozen Kerbals up and working. We do have some problems though. Our science and manufacturing center had to be rebuilt from scratch. We had the building plans, but are missing almost all the technical and scientific data we had on space exploration. We'll have to start again, but this time we'll do it right! No more wars, not more pain. No more death caused by other Kerbals. We're reaching for the stars now. I've assigned what we now call the original Kerbals to various administrative duties. I can't lose them, they're too valuable to us now.

Jeb is charge of the Rocketry division. Valentina is in Charge of the Aerospace Initiative. Bob is the Chief engineer, and Bill is the Chief Scientist. I of course am the Mission controller, and oversee all duties and activities. Together, we'll lead Kerbalkind to a bright Future. Together we will rebuild it all. We plan on launching some rockets today. Doing some simple testing. We'll see how that goes,

Year 1, Day 2- Disaster! We had our first death. Isavie died when her rocket ripped apart on atmospheric reentry. I....I don't know what to say. We are all saddened because of this news, despite the fact that we had several successful launches that brought in quite a bit of scientific data and allowed us to work on some old world airplane parts. I think, we will pause for a time. Allow each of us to mourn this loss, and then press on. Our next task is going to be scouting the area around the KSC, and then the world. We need to know how long we were in hibernation, and what has happened to our planet.

Prologue: From Unknown Journal, Discovered in the Rubble of the ruined Space Center

You know, it's hard to imagine that Kerbals are so violent. We're short, round, and green for Monolith's Sake! Yet here we are on the cusp of annihilation. Thankfully the government got their act together in the 11th hour, and here we are. The last bastion of Kerbin. At this point our doors are open to anyone. If this initiative succeeds it just might be the second chance our species needs. If it doesn't, then I shudder to think that we ended this way.

Everyone thought that rockets would usher in a new age of peace, instead all they've brought is misery and destruction. Oh sure, we made great strides on our journey to the Mun and with our probes to Duna. All good things come to an end I suppose. Still, after the accident...I shudder to think about being alive then. I feel bad enough being around after the end of the the last...hopefully last, resource war. Still...

The new KSC plans are laid before us. We're placing it on the equator, currently in the last habitable zone on the planet. We've got maybe 5 years to put this together and get everyone into hibernation before we run into our emergency stores. Jeb thinks we can get it done in 4, but it will be close. If stragglers keep coming in, then I think we'll make it. I've got to stay positive though. I've got to set a good example

The Diary is blackened and moldy from long years buried under Monolith knows what. You struggle to read the next few pages, with only scarce paragraphs here and there being discernible.

All of the buildings are going up nicely. The Vehicle Assembly Building was finished yesterday, and the concrete for the runway is being poured today. It's amazing how fast this goes when Kerbal ingenuity meets a bit of motivation. I even saw Hermey smile today, and that never happens. I think we all have a sense of pride, and hope that we just haven't had for a long time....

--------------

The factory and science complex looks incredible! I haven't seen a building complex that big since....well ever. The war destroyed most of the cities overnight, and that's where things this big that weren't military were. I can't wait until it's done and I can take a tour. Work has also commenced on the Com Station. The dishes they brought in can probably make it all the way out to Duna! Maybe even farther.

------------
More and more. Just more and more all the time. What are they even doing here, and where is the science crew? In fact where is anyone. I just realized I haven't seen anyone but building crew in days. At first I thought that's because I was just so busy working so many shifts, but I've had two days off now. This doesn't seem good.

-------------
This is crazy! Absolutely Crazy! What in the name of Moho are they talking about! We were the last....but what if they are right. What if we weren't the last?

Many more short scribbles are dashed here and there, but make no sense without more context. You wonder just what happened here, before turning to the last page and read this....

This is it. This is the end! All our hope rests in the fallout shelters being able to withstand the blasts of the Thors. If they can't...we're done for. All that work wasted, gone! All because some crazy Islanders refused to go along with our new government. They called a unified government a travesty, and that we would lose all diversity, all semblance of individuality. Well we just might lose everything.

I suppose it doesn't matter if I keep writing. It just helps me feel better...I never really thought about what it would be like to face the end. I guess this is what it is like. I feel strangely calm though. There is one final bunker in the compound. It's a plan C if you want to call it that. If all of this fails, we have one final hope...but if that happens we really will lose all of our diversity. We aren't supposed to know, but after the Thors took off all personnel heads were told about it and given access. We've been scattered across the base in the hopes that some part remains intact. I suppose it doesn't matter if I write it here. It's not like anybody will ever read this. Either I won't let them or....anyway. They only had the hibernation unit ready for 5 Kerbals. So they put the best of us down there. I'm sad I lost the engineer slot, but I know full well he was more qualified than me. Hopefully the gene banks survive, otherwise we'll only have 5 Kerbals to pull from. I say we, but if the gene banks don't survive at the bottom level, nothing will.

If I make it, then I vow to do my best help lead our people on the next adventure, whatever that may mean. If I don't make it...then I pray to Monolith that someone does. Anyone! A whole race snuffed out of existence is...unfathomable to say the least. Even more so when it's us. I suppose only time will tell. The Thors hit in about 5 minutes. I think I want to spend these last moments looking up to the stars. The last true hope for Kerbal kind. There really isn't much left here for us. I just want to dream...dream that we will make it back out there one day. I'll see you on the other side.

That's the end of the journal. This was the last point marked as a safe zone. It really is up to Plan C. But you already knew that. How long were we down there?

Entry 1

Kerbal Diaries Introduction

In this brand new production, I will be playing Kerbal Space Program, Recording Everything, then going back and writing stories in the style of a Diary, History Text, or News Segment depending on the characters involved or how the events transpire. All recordings will be published to my Youtube channel under Kerbal Diaries, as well as at the bottom of each entry for easy viewing access. I will be following several rules during my playthrough, and those are as follows.

  1. No Quicksaves, Quickloads, or reverts during normal play. They are allowed when I am testing, and entries will make it clear when testing is taking place.
  2. Death is permanent. A Kerbal dies, then he or she is dead forever.
  3. The tech tree must be evenly progressed through, no exceptions.
  4. Mods are in use, but no mod will be used to make the game “easier”. Most mods are part mods, some like FAR make the game even harder. A full mod’s list will be added when I decide exactly what I want to use.
  5. The game is to be played in science rather than career. These reasons will be explained lore wise in the first Journal Entry, but mainly it is so that I don’t waste time chasing down money.

I hope you enjoy this content. Production is actively underway, and I hope to release new entries to keep pace with Kerbalcast. However, I am a busy man and as such I may not make it. I will strive to do my best though.
I hope you enjoy!

Edit:

Here is the mod list I came up with. I decided to keep it somewhat simple since I will be recording so much. I'd like to have as few game crashes as possible. I may introduce or remove mods in the future based on how the game/mods update and if I find something really cool. I'll make notes in entries and make changes to the list as I go along.

  • Hyperedit: Used for testing purposes. Treated in the story like a Simulator.
  • KW Rocketry: Gotta have my heavy lifting rocket parts!
  • Kerbal Attachment System: Includes KIS as well, and will be used for bases and other gameplay elements I quite like.
  • KAX: More aircraft parts!
  • D-Magic Orbital Science: More science, more parts, more options!
  • FAR: I much prefer FAR's aerodynamic model to stock. In some ways makes the game easier, in some ways makes the harder.
  • Karbonite: More parts, more mining, more options.
  • Kerbal Alarm Clock: Gotta have those reminders.
  • Kerbal Engineer: For information and stuff.
  • Stage Recovery: I actually like designing reusable rockets, and this makes doing that possible since it removes the possibility of the Physics engine eating your rocket parts.
